DIGITAL DISTRACTION AMONG EFL STUDENTS

                                                          



    In today's digital era, technology has become an integral part of daily life, including education. While digital technology offers numerous advantages in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL), it also brings new challenges in the form of digital distractions. These distractions can significantly impact students' concentration, motivation, and learning effectiveness. Technology has transformed the way English is taught and learned, with online learning platforms, mobile applications, and various digital tools making educational materials more accessible. However, alongside these benefits, the risks of digital distractions caused by digital devices have also emerged.

    Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok can divert students' attention away from their lessons. Constant notifications and the urge to keep checking updates can severely reduce their focus during study sessions. Additionally, many students are tempted to play online games during study time, which disrupts their study routine and schedule. Other applications, such as video streaming services and music apps, also contribute to digital distractions. Notifications from various apps frequently interrupt students' focus, making it difficult for them to stay engaged in learning activities. The ease of internet access allows students to browse information that is irrelevant to their studies, leading to unproductive time consumption.

   Digital distractions can lead to a decline in academic performance as students lose concentration and time that should be devoted to studying. . Often, the time spent on unproductive digital activities can amount to several hours a day. Digital distractions also reduce students' motivation and engagement in learning. They may feel less inclined to participate in learning activities that require full attention. Dependence on technology can also decrease students' ability to learn independently. Furthermore, face-to-face interactions may diminish due to reliance on digital communication, hindering the development of essential interpersonal communication skills in language learning. Excessive use of digital devices can also negatively affect students' mental and physical health, leading to sleep disturbances, stress, anxiety, and posture problems from prolonged screen time.

   To address these issues, it is crucial to educate students about the negative impacts of digital distractions and the importance of managing their use of technology. Students need to understand how unwise use of technology can hinder their learning process and overall well-being. Teachers can establish classroom rules that limit the use of digital devices for non-educational purposes during class hours to create a more focused and distraction-free learning environment. Additionally, there are apps designed to help reduce distractions, such as site blockers or time management apps, which can help students stay focused on their studies. 

  Training students to develop self-management skills, such as creating effective study schedules and setting clear learning goals, is vital to help them manage their time and avoid digital distractions. Creating a distraction-free learning environment by organizing classroom layouts and using technology wisely can also be an effective solution. Collaboration between parents and teachers in monitoring and guiding students' use of technology is also essential. Parents and teachers need to work together to ensure that students use technology wisely and are not distracted by digital devices. Overall, digital distractions pose a real challenge in EFL learning in this digital age. Although technology offers many benefits, it is crucial to address digital distractions with appropriate strategies. By raising awareness and developing self-management skills, students can use technology optimally without being hindered by its negative effects. Educators and educational institutions must also play an active role in creating a conducive learning environment where technology is used as a supportive tool rather than an obstacle to the learning process.

The constant notifications and the temptation to check updates can severely disrupt students' focus, leading to decreased comprehension and retention of study materials. Similarly, research by Rosen, Carrier, and Cheever (2013) demonstrated that students who frequently engaged in multitasking with digital devices had lower academic achievement due to reduced cognitive capacity for deep learning.
